Devil's Harvest

Natasha has even offered him the use of a house that she has recently acquired. Daniel readily accepts, bring his fiance Laura with him. The couple soon begin to notice strange and disturbing events taking place in the house, events that trigger an old recurring dream, which comes back to haunt Daniel. There is some terrible, near forgotten secret from the past tied up with Daniel, Natasha, a local crazed priest and the sea. The increasingly tormented Daniel can't quite remember, but when he hears an old local legend about a demon living in the sea that preys on the guilty, the long submerged memories start falling into place. Monstrous events are about to occur at the house. The lives and souls of everyone involved are at state, threatened by an ancient evil whose time has finally come.

Looney Tunes Super Stars: Bugs Bunny Hare Extraordinaire

Looney Tunes Super Stars: Bugs Bunny Hare Extraordinaire Review

Looney Tunes Super Stars: Bugs Bunny Hare Extraordinaire Feature

  • LOONEY TUNES SUPER STARS BUGS BUNNY HARE EXTRAORDI (DVD MOVIE)
None of the 15 cartoons in Hare Extraordinaire have been released on DVD before. The best film in the collection is Friz Freleng's "Hare Trimmed" (1953), with its brilliant animation of Bugs disguised as Granny, daintily lifting his skirts as he prances about on his outsize rabbit feet. "Mutiny on the Bunny" (1950), one of several shorts Freleng made with Yosemite Sam as a pirate, offers plenty of laughs, as do "Napoleon Bunny-Part" (1956) and "Bedeviled Rabbit" (1957). "Lumber Jack-Rabbit" (1955) was the only Warner cartoon made in 3-D as part of the mid-50's craze, but it's not a distinguished film. Many of these cartoons rank as B- and C-level entries in the Warner Bros. canon. Robert McKimson's "Bushy Hair" (1950) is essentially a remake of his "Gorilla My Dreams" (1948)--as is Freleng's "Apes of Wrath" (1959). In the very late McKimson cartoons "The Million Hare" (1963) and "False Hare" (1964, the last theatrical Bugs short), the energy has gone out of the animation, the direction, and even Mel Blanc's vocal performances. In contrast to the six Looney Tunes Golden Collections, Hare Extraordinaire feels sloppily produced. Several of the films have been ineptly cropped to give the impression they were made for a widescreen format: when Bugs dresses up as Josephine in "Napoleon Bunny-Part," most of his bonnet is cut off. Areas of color shimmer and boil in "Lumber Jack-Rabbit." Warner cartoon fans will want Hare Extraordinaire to complete their collections, but it's a disappointing follow-up to the exemplary Golden sets. (Unrated, suitable for all ages: cartoon violence) --Charles Solomon

Before The Devil Knows Your Dead

Before The Devil Knows Your Dead Review

Sidney Lumet’s Before the Devil Knows You’re Dead is an exceptionally dark story about a crime gone wrong and the complicated reasons behind it. Philip Seymour Hoffman and Ethan Hawke are outstanding as brothers whose mutual love-hate relationship subtly colors their agreement to rob their own parents’ jewelry store, and more explicitly affects the anxious aftermath of their villainy when their mother (Rosemary Harris) ends up shot. Hoffman’s steely, emotionally locked-up Andy, despite pulling down six figures as a corporate executive, is supporting an expensive drug habit while trying to leave the country with his depressed wife, Gina (Marisa Tomei). Hank (Hawke), a whipped dog of low intelligence, owes back alimony and child support to his ex-spouse. Both men need money and agree to rip off their parents' business, a decision that goes awry and puts both men in various kinds of jeopardy while their mother remains comatose and their father (Albert Finney) lurches along trying to make sense of anything. Writer Kelly Masterson's screenplay employs a perhaps now-overly-familiar time-shifting tactic, jumping around the chronology of the story's events and replaying scenes from different vantage points. The effect is a little tedious but successfully deconstructs the film's drama in a way that shows how such terrible events are directly linked to family dysfunction, old wounds between parent and child, between siblings, that fester into full-blown tragedy. Eighty-three-year-old director Lumet (Serpico) employs bleached colors and scenes of blunt sexuality and violence, adding to the moral rudderlessness and banality of this airless world. If Devil feels a little reductive and insistently grim, it is also a generally persuasive work by an old master. --Tom Keogh

The Devil's Backbone

The Devil's Backbone Review

Seething passions, wandering ghosts, and an unexploded bomb fill this beautifully filmed tale of war and suspense. Though The Devil's Backbone was advertised as a horror movie in the States, it's really more of a drama that happens to have ghosts in it. During the Spanish Civil War, young Carlos is abandoned at a completely isolated orphanage. The tensions therein have been building for years, exacerbated by the unexploded bomb resting menacingly in the courtyard. Bullies scheme, tempers flare, and a ghost that visits Carlos's bed seems to be the key to it all. The movie is full of excellent performances, especially by Marisa Paredes as the gruff-but-kind headmistress, Eduardo Noriega as the handyman with secrets to keep, and Federico Luppi as the benevolent professor who likes to keep deformed fetuses in jars. A rich, satisfying drama with some good, spooky fun thrown in. --Ali Davis
